One of the most memorable things of your wedding day will be the food! Guests always remember the food, horrible or lovely – it somehow seems to be something that stays with most guests for months and even years after a wedding.

During each couples planning process catering will at some point be a topic. Whether to serve Beef or Chicken or even both, to provide starters or not – this topic is in a lot of cases a deep dive and one that is debated back and forward. The word “Buffet” evokes a range of different feelings and opinions so here are some Pro’s and Con’s to consider when making your choice whether to Buffet or not to Buffet:

To Buffet – Pro’s

  1.   Bigger variety of options

Buffet’s usually mean more options – this is purely compared to a plated menu option. Not a lot of plated menus provide more than one meat selection. This is also usually true for side dish options; your buffet menu will usually include 4 side dishes of your choice compared to 2 or 3 maximum for plated meals

  1.   Ease on requirements and allergies

This is a major Pro! And might be the biggest determining factor if you have a lot of guests with allergies. If you have hands-on venue chances are the chefs who have prepared the dishes will be present on the day of your wedding to guide guests with allergies and preferences to ensure they do not eat anything that doesn’t agree with them.

To Buffet – Con’s

  1.   Guests stand in a que.

This is usually the main reason for couples to opt for a plated or alternative menu – avoiding queuing for a meal. Depending on the number of guests and possibility for additional buffet stations this should be considered – be sure to check with your venue on how food is served and what it will mean for your timeline (if you decide on plated and if you decide on buffet).

  1.   Can be seen as “basic”

Some couples feel like a buffet dinner is something everyone does. Be sure to ask your venue what other options of catering they provide as you might not be limited to a “basic” buffet of plated menu – they might have family style options, pizza stations of even dinner snack options.

Ultimately it is your wedding day and you should be catering to your own preference; a major consideration should be the options your venue or caterer provides and their flexibility to providing your dream menu. At Galagos Country Estate we pride ourselves in providing 4 menu options to all couples, should you not fond your dream menu within one of these options – be sure to communicate this with your wedding coordinator as she will be able to customize your dream menu alongside our Head Chef.
