When planning a wedding, it’s easy to focus on the big things like the dress, venue, flowers, cake. But then a tiny detail pops up and suddenly you’re wondering. Do we need boutonnieres?

Boutonnières are those small flowers worn on the left lapel and  have been around for centuries. Long ago, men wore blooms as symbols of loyalty, luck, and protection, always wearing them close to the heart. Over time, they became a wedding tradition, especially for grooms, groomsmen, and fathers, often matching the bridal bouquet or wedding colours.

Fast forward to modern weddings, and the rules are happily relaxed. Some couples love the classic look: a single rose, a bit of greenery, or even a textured bloom like ranunculus, fynbos or a succulent. Boutonnières can tie the wedding party together beautifully and add that extra touch in photos.

Others choose to skip them, and that’s perfectly okay too. Minimalist styles, allergies, sustainability choices, or simply wanting fewer details to manage all play a role. Some couples opt for alternatives like fabric flowers, wooden pins, or no lapel accessories at all.

Boutonnière or Bouton-Not?

There’s no right or wrong answer. If you love tradition, detail, and floral coordination, they might be for you. If your style is relaxed, modern, or non-traditional, you won’t be breaking any rules by leaving them out.
