When choosing a wedding ring, especially for men, two popular metals are tungsten and titanium. While tungsten is trendy, titanium is often the better choice in the long run. Let’s look closer, including the chemical elements and price differences.

Tungsten, represented by the chemical element W (atomic number 74), is known for its strength and resistance to scratches. This makes it a popular option for those who want a durable and stylish ring. Tungsten rings are often less expensive than titanium, making them an attractive choice if you want something affordable. However, tungsten rings are pretty heavy, making daily wear uncomfortable. They also tend to have a colour coating, like black or rose gold, which wears off over time. Despite being strong, tungsten is brittle and can break or shatter if dropped.

Titanium, represented by the chemical element Ti (atomic number 22), is much lighter than tungsten. This makes titanium rings far more comfortable to wear every day. Titanium is lightweight, incredibly durable, and corrosion-resistant, ensuring it looks good for years. In terms of price, titanium is usually more expensive than tungsten. Still, it offers better value in the long run because of its lasting durability and colour retention.

Pure titanium is naturally hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for people with sensitive skin or metal allergies.  For this reason, commercially pure titanium is usually used in medical implants. Titanium labelled hypoallergenic uses grade 1-4 titanium, nickel-free and very safe for sensitive skin.

Tungsten jewellery is usually made from tungsten carbide, a mix of tungsten and carbon. Tungsten doesn’t cause allergies, but the metals used in making tungsten carbide jewellery matter.

Many high-quality tungsten rings use nickel as a binder, which is usually safe because the nickel is tightly bound in the alloy. This means it’s less likely to touch the skin and cause an allergic reaction. These rings are hypoallergenic for most people but not for those with extreme nickel sensitivity.

Cheaper tungsten rings might use cobalt instead of nickel as a binder. Cobalt can react with the skin and cause irritation or allergies, especially for people with sensitive skin.

When considering the two metals, titanium is the better long-term choice. It’s light, strong, and resistant to wear and tear while also being comfortable. Pure titanium is a safer and more consistently hypoallergenic option, especially for people with nickel allergies. Tungsten may be cheaper upfront, but its heaviness and tendency to fade or break make it less suitable for everyday wear over many years.

If you want a ring that represents lasting love and commitment, titanium, though slightly more expensive, offers the best balance of comfort, durability, and long-term value.
