For most girls getting a wedding dress designed and made it’s the first time they will work with a designer. Although this is a very exciting journey – it is also difficult and a bit stressful because it is a new way of aquit=ring a dress. Many people cannot visualise what the dress will look like and having a social media picture of the dress you want is not always the right way to go.
It helps a lot if the client knows what suits them – but I have found over the years that some need help. Trying on a few ready made dresses is sometimes a good way to start. I like making a rough sample of the dress the client has in mind and then together we change and correct what doesn’t look right in the mirror.
I also prefer going material shopping with the client. I like to check quality and quantity. Very often a bride will fall in love with a piece of material that can change the whole design and then I should be there to advise and use my creativity to make it all come together. The shopping trip is normally a very exciting event. Mom, a friend or a sister or all three can join. We have coffee and shop until we have found what is the bride’s dream piece of material.
Once the sample has met the bride and my approval – we can cut and move to the first real fitting. Slowly but surely the right silhouette and perfect fit come to life. It is always best to have enough time especially if the bride wants intricate lace handwork or beading.
I absolutely love doing a whole wedding where bridesmaids, flowergirls and moms are included – this always creates the best final picture of the wedding and creates a beautiful journey for all.
The end stretch is often tricky, the bride may become a little nervous and now I as a designer must be designer, mother and friend. The sad part is when the bride walks down the aisle once you have dressed her. Joining the bride in the all the joy – all the beauty coming together…But the journey comes to an end.
