Weddings are often a celebration of new beginnings — but sometimes, the most meaningful moments are the ones that honor the past. For one particularly beautiful wedding, I had the immense privilege of contributing something truly personal: custom illustrations for the dessert table, each one a tribute to a beloved woman and her signature treat.
From “Tannie Marianne se Rice Krispie blokkies” to “Ma Henriette se Shortbread,” every dessert carried a story — a memory baked into each bite. These weren’t just sweets; they were heirlooms of flavor, passed down through generations, each one evoking laughter-filled kitchens, handwritten recipe cards, and the comforting embrace of home.
To bring these stories to life, I created hand-drawn portraits of each woman alongside her iconic dessert. These illustrations weren’t just decorative — they were deeply symbolic. They honored the hands that stirred, rolled, and baked with love. They reminded guests that behind every cherished recipe is a person, a legacy, and a lifetime of shared moments.
The result? A dessert table that didn’t just satisfy the sweet tooth — it stirred the soul. Guests lingered, smiled, and reminisced. Some even shed a tear. It was a reminder that food is memory, and art can be a bridge between generations.
At WcZ Art, I believe in capturing more than just likeness — I aim to capture essence. This project was a celebration of women, of family, of tradition — and of the quiet, powerful ways love shows up in everyday life.
Because sometimes, the sweetest part of a wedding isn’t the cake — it’s the stories we tell through sugar, flour, and a little bit of heart. 💛
