“After women, Flowers are the most divine creations: – Christian Dior

It is the month of September – the season for blossoms and blooms. The season for matric dances and weddings.

Flowers have always been part of the fashion world – celebrating the beauty of nature. Playing a role from the earliest times. From ancient civilizations like Egypt and Greece, where flowers were used in intricate patterns on garments – to the Renaissance period when botanical prints became popular. In Victorian times flowers were embroidered onto dresses and accessories to convey femininity and a feeling of love and affection. More recently, Dior and Alexander McQueen have used floral motifs to explore themes such as romance and nature.

Floral motifs are not only aesthetically pleasing – they carry deeper meaning and symbolism. The rose portrays love and passion, daisies and sunflowers speak of happiness, cherry blossoms in the Asian culture represent renewal. Lilies represent purity, innocence and rebirth. Designers often draw inspiration from the influences of different flowers when incorporating floral patterns into their creations.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in floral patterns in haute couture trickling down to street fashion. With bolder colours and larger scale prints. With evening and bridal wear we see beading and embroidery in floral patterns. 3-Dimensional flowers are very popular at the moment and we see fabrics with delicate flowers sewn on in all shapes and sizes. These materials are photographically very successful and thus also popular with brides.
