“Flowers don’t tell, they show.” – Stephanie Skeem

Flowers are beautiful. This is fact, and as such, flowers have been used as decorations for centuries. They became popular in the middle ages because their wonderful scents hid the smells of the brides when bathing was optional. Thank goodness that hygiene practices have changed since then.

But what if you would like to have flowers on your cake? Here we have several options to make that wish a reality.

Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers always look stunning on a cake. Having a spray of flowers interspersed with greenery is a classic look. By coordinating with your florist, you can arrange for extra flowers to be placed on the cake. This ensures cohesion between your cake and the wedding.

Unfortunately, there are problems with fresh flowers. Some flowers are toxic and should not come anywhere near food. Gypsophila, commonly known as ‘Baby’s Breath”, can cause stomach problems if eaten. Luckily, many of these flowers can simply be removed before serving, but accidents happen.

The other problem with fresh flowers is that they need water to stay perky. You run the risk of having the flowers wilt during the proceedings of the day. This can be mitigated by keeping the cake in the fridge while the ceremony is happening.

Sugar Flowers

Sugar flowers are flowers that are made from a sugary substance called Gum paste. Gum paste is a tough substance that we use to make delicate and realistic looking flowers. The paste is rolled out as thin as possible, cut and shaped to make the petals and leaves. The problem is that the process is very labour intensive and therefore, very expensive.

Fondant Flowers

Flowers made from fondant are also sugar flowers, but you get a very different result. While you can make many flowers very quickly, they don’t look nearly as realistic as the gum paste flowers do. This does mean that you can cover the cake in flowers for a much cheaper cost.

With this knowledge in hand, we wish you luck in picking out the right flowers for your cake!
