Where the bay meets the sky

There’s something about the West Coast of South Africa that gets under your skin. The light out here is different – softer in the late afternoon, more golden, like it’s been filtered through the ocean air. Sea Trader sits right on the edge of the bay, and on a clear day like this one, the water sparkled in a way that no amount of editing could improve.

It was a beautifully hot day with a light breeze keeping things comfortable – the kind of weather you couldn’t script if you tried. St Helena Bay is one of those quiet, unhurried places that makes you feel like time is moving a little slower, and the whole wedding felt that way too.

The calm before the joy

Casha & Philip got ready right at the venue, which made for such a relaxed and unhurried morning. There’s something special about capturing those quiet moments before the ceremony. They also decided to forgo bridesmaids and groomsmen and instead invited all their friends to get ready with them. How fun!

With the venue right there and the bay just beyond the windows, even the getting-ready shots had that effortless West Coast light filtering through. Everything felt easy and intimate before the day gathered pace.

Vows on the sand

The ceremony was held right on the sand – bare feet, a gentle breeze off the water, and the kind of stillness that only happens when everyone in the room is paying attention to exactly the right thing. With the bay as the backdrop, it didn’t need much else.

Afterwards, guests gathered for canapes overlooking the water while the sun began its slow descent – one of those effortless cocktail hours where conversations flow easily and everyone seems genuinely happy to be there.

Just the two of them

The couple shoot was one of those sessions that reminds you why you do this work. With the sun dropping lower, the light went warm and delicate – the kind that wraps around people and makes everything feel a little more tender. We kept it intimate and unhurried, letting them just be together while I worked around them.

“The light out here does half the work for you – all you need to do is put the right people in it.”

Dinner, dancing, and absolutely no holding back

As the evening took over, so did the energy. The dinner was beautiful – a proper feast that brought everyone to the table – and the dancing that followed was the kind that makes you laugh just watching it. The dance floor was full all night, with some truly outrageous moves from guests who clearly weren’t saving anything for the drive home.

These are the moments I love most to document – when the formality is completely gone and what’s left is just joy.
